Protect yourself from fraud. We have compiled our best tips and tricks to help you better avoid fraud in its many forms. While it is nearly impossible to protect yourself entirely from fraud, these tips may help to keep your finances and identity a bit safer.
Our first tip is one of the easiest that you can do. Did you receive a strange email or phone call that you aren’t sure about? Ask a trusted family member or friend their opinion before making any decisions. Sometimes simply talking to someone we trust can save us a headache in the future. If you are the recipient of an intimidating phone call or email, do not be pressured into making a decision quickly. We suggest adding your phone number to the Do Not Call registry at donotcall.gov to help prevent fraudulent phone calls.
Switch to eStatements and eReceipts
Another simple step you can take to help prevent fraud is to simply read over your monthly statements to check your transactions. Once ready to dispose of these and other important documents, do not forget that the Credit Union offers a free Shred Event every August to shred your documents safely. If you receive your monthly statements in the mail, then we highly suggest switching to eStatements which are available through our online banking and offer an added layer of security. Make that switch to eStatements by signing up here!
Use the app and biometrics if possible
While logged into online banking for your eStatements, did you know that you can set up withdrawal alerts? Any time money is withdrawn from your account, you can receive a text or email with the details almost instantly. If you use our F+ app for online banking then we also suggest enabling biometrics, or TouchID or Facial Recognition to log into your app, as these items are very difficult to duplicate. If you log in through a computer, be sure to use a detailed and long password.
Protect your account with the CardNav app
Technology isn’t your thing, then we also recommend downloading the CardNav app. CardNav is free and allows you to set up notifications for every purchase made on your debit card. Not only can you get alerted, but you can also turn on or off your debit card to your liking and even make it so that your card only works when physically near you. You can also alert us to your traveling through the CardNav app and also budget your money within the app. Download the CardNav App from the Apple app store here or from the Google Play store here.
It is easy for all of us to fall victim to a scam or fraud of some sort, but taking these small steps may help keep you a little safer. Remember that if you ever feel uneasy about a purchase or situation, you can give us a call and we’ll do our best to get to the bottom of the issue right away.
